ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Since 1950, public communication about the neurobiological-psychosocial basis of mental illness from the diathesis-stress model has promoted reception to treatment yet violent/dangerous stereotypes have increased during this period. Moreover, public mental health communication efforts have predominantly diffused in English-language media, excluding Spanish/Latinx media and its consumers from these efforts. To inform future mental health communication strategies, this study leverages high versus low diffusion of public mental health communication across English and Spanish/Latinx media to examine public mental health communication effects on stigma and treatment beliefs via neurobiological-psychosocial beliefs. METHODS: A quota sample of 2058 U.S.-based Latinx residents ages 13-86 with diverse language/cultural media preferences was recruited to self-complete a survey about mental health information acquisition in 2021. Assessments ascertained frequency of Spanish/Latinx and English media use and mental health content scanning and seeking (α = 0.86-0.94); and items from the General Social Survey about mental illness neurobiological-psychosocial causal beliefs (α = 0.72)-genetics, brain chemistry, environment, stress; treatment beliefs-mental illness improves with treatment or on its own; and stigma beliefs-violent/dangerous and bad character stereotypes and unwillingness to socialize with a person with mental illness. Structural equation models estimated total, direct, and indirect effects of Spanish/Latinx and English media exposures on treatment and stigma beliefs via neurobiological-psychosocial beliefs, net individual/family factors. RESULTS: Spanish/Latinx media reduced, while English media increased, neurobiological-psychosocial beliefs (p < 0.01). Neurobiological-psychosocial beliefs, in turn, increased treatment and stigma beliefs (p < 0.01), simultaneously. Indirect pathways were also significant (p < 0.05). Proportion mediated on treatment beliefs was one-third for Spanish/Latinx and two-thirds for English media. Proportion mediated on stigma beliefs for all media exposures averaged ≥1. CONCLUSIONS: While consumers of Spanish/Latinx media report lower neurobiological-psychosocial knowledge that impedes treatment beliefs, consumers of English media report greater neurobiological-psychosocial and treatment knowledge and, consequently, more stigma. Innovation in public mental health communication is needed to counter stigma and health inequity.

ABSTRACT

Background/Objectives: Currently, there are insufficient data to recommend the treatment of patients with hepatitis B e antigen (HBeAg)-negative chronic infection who have normal ALT and low HBV DNA, since the prognosis is generally regarded as favorable. The aim of this pilot study was to determine whether the use of tenofovir disoproxil fumarate (TDF) 300 mg/day for 3 years was able to achieve functional cure (HBsAg loss) and HBsAg seroconversion in HBeAb-positive individuals. Methods: Fifty patients not on antiviral therapy (40% men, mean age 48.9 ± 10.9 years, 84% Asians) with minimal fibrosis were enrolled. Results: TDF reduced HBV DNA significantly to undetectable levels after 6 months. Overall, 48.3% of inactive carriers (baseline HBV DNA < 2000 IU/mL) remained HBV DNA negative 6 months after treatment withdrawal, which was significantly higher than the 5.6% in those who were not inactive carriers (baseline HBV DNA ≥ 2000 IU/mL) (p = 0.003). The HBsAg levels did not drop throughout the study period with no difference between inactive carriers versus those who were not. Five inactive carriers achieved functional cure, but none of these were amongst those who were not inactive carriers. No renal dysfunction or ALT flare on treatment withdrawal was observed. Conclusions: TDF could potentially be used to induce functional cure in patients who are inactive carriers with normal ALT, low HBV DNA and without advanced fibrosis.

ABSTRACT

Stevens-Johnson Syndrome/Toxic Epidermal Necrolysis (SJS/TEN) is a predominantly drug-induced disease, with a mortality rate of 15-20%, that engages the expertise of multiple disciplines: dermatology, allergy, immunology, clinical pharmacology, burn surgery, ophthalmology, urogynecology, and psychiatry. SJS/TEN has an incidence of 1-5/million persons per year in the United States, with even higher rates globally. One of the challenges of SJS/TEN has been developing the research infrastructure and coordination to answer questions capable of transforming clinical care and leading to improved patient outcomes. SJS/TEN 2021, the third research meeting of its kind, was held as a virtual meeting on August 28-29, 2021. The meeting brought together 428 international scientists, in addition to a community of 140 SJS/TEN survivors and family members. The goal of the meeting was to brainstorm strategies to support the continued growth of an international SJS/TEN research network, bridging science and the community. The community workshop section of the meeting focused on eight primary themes: mental health, eye care, SJS/TEN in children, non-drug induced SJS/TEN, long-term health complications, new advances in mechanisms and basic science, managing long-term scarring, considerations for skin of color, and COVID-19 vaccines. The meeting featured several important updates and identified areas of unmet research and clinical need that will be highlighted in this white paper.

ABSTRACT

While significant mental illness stigma disparities across race/ethnicity and gender exist, little is known about the efficacy of anti-stigma interventions in reducing these intersectional disparities. We examine the two-year effects of school-based anti-stigma interventions on race/ethnic and gender intersectional stigma disparities among adolescents. An ethnically and socioeconomically diverse sixth grade sample (N = 302) self-completed surveys assessing stigma before randomly receiving an anti-stigma curriculum and/or contact intervention versus no intervention. Surveys were also self-completed two-years post-intervention. Stigma measures assessed general mental illness knowledge/attitudes, awareness/action, and social distance. Stigma towards peers with specific mental illnesses were examined using vignettes-two adolescent characters were described as having bipolar (Julia) and social anxiety (David) disorder. Race/ethnicity and gender were cross-classified into six intersectional groups (Latina/o, Non-Latina/o Black, and Non-Latina/o White girls and boys). Linear regressions adjusting for poverty and mental illness familiarity examined anti-stigma intervention effects across intersectional groups in sixth and eighth grade. The school-based anti-stigma intervention reduced intersectional stigma disparities over the two-year study period. While Non-Latino Black boys and Latino boys/girls reported greater disparities in stigma at baseline compared to Non-Latina White girls, these disparities (14 total) were predominantly eliminated in the two-year follow-up following receipt of the curriculum and contact components to just one remaining disparity post-intervention among Non-Latino Black boys. By identifying differences in how school-based anti-stigma interventions reduce mental illness stigma for unique race/ethnic and gender intersectional groups, we can better understand how to shape future anti-stigma interventions for diverse intersectional populations.

ABSTRACT

Methotrexate (MTX) is a readily accessible drug, first used in 1948 and employed for a wide variety of indications since then. However, despite widespread off-label use, FDA labeling does not include approved indications for the use of MTX for many inflammatory skin diseases in pediatric patients, including morphea, psoriasis, atopic dermatitis, and alopecia areata, among others. Without published treatment guidelines, some clinicians may be hesitant to use MTX off-label, or uncomfortable prescribing MTX in this population. To address this unmet need, an expert consensus committee was convened to develop evidence- and consensus-based guidelines for use of MTX to treat pediatric inflammatory skin disease. Clinicians with experience and expertise in clinical research, drug development, and treating inflammatory skin disease in pediatric patients with MTX were recruited. Five committees were created based on major topic areas: (1) indications and contraindications, (2) dosing, (3) interactions with immunizations and medications, (4) adverse effects (potential for and management of), and (5) monitoring needs. Pertinent questions were generated and addressed by the relevant committee. The entire group participated in a modified Delphi process to establish agreement on recommendations for each question. The committee developed 46 evidence- and consensus-based recommendations, each with >70% agreement among members, across all five topics. These are presented in tables and text, along with a discussion of supporting literature, and level of evidence. These evidence- and consensus-based recommendations will support safe and effective use of MTX for the underserved population of pediatric patients who may benefit from this valuable, time-honored medication.

ABSTRACT

COVID-19 created a global crisis, exacerbating disparities in social determinants of health (SDOH) and mental health (MH). Research on pandemic-related MH and help-seeking is scarce, especially among high-risk populations such as college/university students. We examined self-rated MH and psychological distress, the perceived need for MH services/support, and the use of MH services across the SDOH among college/university students during the start of the pandemic. Data from the COVID-19 Texas College Student Experiences Survey (n = 746) include full- and part-time undergraduate/graduate students. Regressions examined self-rated MH, psychological distress, perceived need, and service use across SDOH, controlling for pre-pandemic MH, age, gender, and race/ethnicity. Economic stability was associated with higher risk of poor MH and need for MH services/support. Aspects of the social/community context protected student MH, especially among foreign-born students. Racial discrimination was associated with both greater psychological distress and use of services. Finally, beliefs related to the sufficiency of available institutional MH resources shaped perceived need for and use of services. Although the worst of the pandemic is behind us, the inequitable distribution of the SDOH among students is unwavering. Demand for MH support is high, requiring higher education institutions to better mobilize MH services to meet the needs of students from diverse social contexts.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: Transcript and protein expression were interrogated to examine gene locus and pathway regulation in the peripheral blood of active adult dermatomyositis (DM) and juvenile DM patients receiving immunosuppressive therapies. METHODS: Expression data from 14 DM and 12 juvenile DM patients were compared to matched healthy controls. Regulatory effects at the transcript and protein level were analyzed by multi-enrichment analysis for assessment of affected pathways within DM and juvenile DM. RESULTS: Expression of 1,124 gene loci were significantly altered at the transcript or protein levels across DM or juvenile DM, with 70 genes shared. A subset of interferon-stimulated genes was elevated, including CXCL10, ISG15, OAS1, CLEC4A, and STAT1. Innate immune markers specific to neutrophil granules and neutrophil extracellular traps were up-regulated in both DM and juvenile DM, including BPI, CTSG, ELANE, LTF, MPO, and MMP8. Pathway analysis revealed up-regulation of PI3K/AKT, ERK, and p38 MAPK signaling, whose central components were broadly up-regulated in DM, while peripheral upstream and downstream components were differentially regulated in both DM and juvenile DM. Up-regulated components shared by DM and juvenile DM included cytokine:receptor pairs LGALS9:HAVCR2, LTF/NAMPT/S100A8/HSPA1A:TLR4, CSF2:CSF2RA, EPO:EPOR, FGF2/FGF8:FGFR, several Bcl-2 components, and numerous glycolytic enzymes. Pathways unique to DM included sirtuin signaling, aryl hydrocarbon receptor signaling, protein ubiquitination, and granzyme B signaling. CONCLUSION: The combination of proteomics and transcript expression by multi-enrichment analysis broadened the identification of up- and down-regulated pathways among active DM and juvenile DM patients. These pathways, particularly those which feed into PI3K/AKT and MAPK signaling and neutrophil degranulation, may be potential therapeutic targets.

OBJECTIVES: We developed and evaluated new media-related health information acquisition measures for U.S.-based Latino populations. METHODS: In 2021, a sample of U.S.-based Latino adults (N = 1574) self-completed a 20-min survey of health information acquisition measures across three language/cultural dimensions: Spanish media, Latino-tailored media in English, and general media in English. Socio-demographics were also ascertained. Means and standard deviations for the health acquisition measures were adjusted for age and sex and reported across nativity status. RESULTS: The sample was diverse across age, gender, race, ethnicity, socioeconomic status, migration, and language competency. Internal consistency reliability of developed scales was excellent overall and within age, gender, race, ethnicity, and socioeconomic subgroups (Cronbach's alphas = 0.86-0.94). English media scales had higher means overall indicating higher prolonged quantity (i.e., dosage) than Spanish media scales. In contrast, standard deviations for Spanish media scales were higher overall indicating broader reach at lower doses than English media scales. CONCLUSIONS: Findings suggest English-language media is popular among Latino populations overall. However, Spanish-language media retains broad reach through both passive and active exposure. Our findings demonstrate the value of including more nuanced measurement of health information acquisition such as the scales developed in this study to improve health promotion among Latino populations.

ABSTRACT

Objective: We sought to describe skin injuries associated with unapproved topical mole and skin tag removers containing concentrated salicylic acid, Sanguinaria canadensis, or other caustic agents. Methods: We identified skin injuries associated with unapproved non-device topical mole and skin tag removers reported to the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) through October 30, 2021 or described in Amazon consumer product reviews between 2019 and 2021. Results: We identified 38 cases, including 30 from Amazon consumer product reviews and eight reported to the FDA. Twenty-eight were from 2021. The most common reason for use was for mole and/or skin tag removal. Listed ingredients included salicylic acid, Sanguinaria canadensis, botanicals (includes homeopathic products), and calcium oxide. Seven cases involved products without ingredients listed. Adverse events included burns, pain, and ulceration, some resulting in permanent scarring and disfigurement. There were 14 facial injuries, including four adjacent to the eye. Reported treatments included antibiotics, hospital care, wound care, and dermatology advice to have a skin graft. Limitations: Limitations include underreporting of adverse events to the FDA, limited clinical details and potential bias in consumer reviews, and poor replicability of review searches due to the dynamic nature of the Amazon website. Conclusion: Unapproved, non-device topical mole and skin tag removers are associated with serious skin injuries. We found Amazon consumer reviews to be a novel and useful data source for safety surveillance of these types of skin products. When dermatologists are consulted about skin injuries, exposure to these products should be considered in the differential diagnosis.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: Biomarkers that predict response to immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICI) in recurrent or metastatic head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (R/M HNSCC) are needed. This retrospective study assessed tumor mutational burden (TMB) and outcomes in the phase II HAWK and CONDOR and phase III EAGLE studies of durvalumab with or without tremelimumab in platinum-resistant R/M HNSCC. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Tumor samples from HAWK/CONDOR (N = 153) and blood samples from EAGLE (N = 247) were analyzed for TMB. Associations with survival were evaluated for tissue TMB (tTMB) at cutoffs from 10 to 20 mutations/megabase (mut/Mb) and for blood plasma TMB (bTMB) at cutoffs from 8 to 24 mut/Mb. RESULTS: In HAWK/CONDOR, overall survival (OS) with durvalumab with or without tremelimumab was longer for high versus low tTMB: statistically significant differences were observed with durvalumab plus tremelimumab at tTMB ≥ 10 mut/Mb [HR, 0.52 (95% confidence interval, CI, 0.28-0.98)] and tTMB ≥ 12 mut/Mb [HR, 0.46 (95% CI, 0.24-0.86)]. In EAGLE, a significant OS benefit versus chemotherapy was observed with durvalumab and durvalumab plus tremelimumab at bTMB≥16 mut/Mb [HR, 0.39 (95% CI, 0.20-0.76) and 0.38 (95% CI, 0.19-0.78), respectively] but not bTMB < 16 mut/Mb [HR, 0.92 (0.61-1.37) and 0.92 (95% CI, 0.62-1.36), respectively]. A significant progression-free survival benefit was also observed in the ICI arms versus chemotherapy at bTMB ≥ 16 mut/Mb. CONCLUSIONS: Findings support TMB as a biomarker for predicting survival in patients with platinum-resistant R/M HNSCC treated with ICIs. The analysis of EAGLE demonstrated that bTMB was predictive of survival with ICI treatment versus chemotherapy in a large, randomized controlled study population.

ABSTRACT

Contact tracing-the process of identifying, isolating, and managing infected persons and their contacts-is a recognized public health measure for controlling the transmission of infectious diseases. In the context of the COVID-19 pandemic, contact tracing has received intense attention. We provide a brief overview of the history of contact tracing during several major disease outbreaks in the past century: syphilis and other sexually transmitted infections, HIV infection, tuberculosis, Ebola virus disease, and COVID-19. Our discussion on the barriers to and facilitators of contact tracing offers a perspective on societal and institutional roles and dynamics, stigma as a major barrier to effective tracing efforts, and how the nature and epidemiology of the infection itself can affect its success. We explore the evolution and adaptation of contact tracing and provide insights for future programming and research. INTRODUCTION: This study identifies mental health, tobacco prevention, alcohol/beer, food/beverage, pharmaceutical, and other health-related advertisements across Spanish- and English-language TV networks owned by the same parent media company in the U.S. as commercial determinants of health disparities for Latino populations and/or viewers of Spanish-language TV. METHODS: A 3-week composite sample of Telemundo and National Broadcasting Company prime-time TV owned by the same parent media company was randomly drawn from March 31, 2021 to June 12, 2021 in Houston, Texas. A total of 1,593 health-related advertisements were yielded for systematic content analysis. Analyses included intercoder reliability, descriptive and bivariate analysis, and rate ratio and rate difference calculations. RESULTS: Telemundo had significantly more health-adverse and fewer health-beneficial advertisements than National Broadcasting Company. Telemundo broadcasted about 11 more alcohol (95% CI=9.1, 12.5) and 5 more unhealthy/noncore food/beverages (95% CI=2.0, 7.2) advertisements per hour of TV advertisement programming than the National Broadcasting Company. Telemundo also broadcasted about 1 fewer mental health/tobacco prevention (95% CI= -0.9, -0.2), 3 fewer healthy/core food/beverages (95% CI= -1.5, -4.3), and 4 fewer pharmaceutical (95% CI= -2.4, -5.7) advertisements per hour of advertisement programming than the National Broadcasting Company. CONCLUSIONS: Overall greater health-adverse and fewer health-beneficial advertisements are broadcasted on Spanish-language than on English-language TV. Unchecked corporate marketing strategies may serve as a commercial determinant of health disparities for Latino populations by Spanish-language TV.

ABSTRACT

Postmarket surveillance is critical for the identification of rare safety risks, which are unlikely to be identified during clinical trials and the drug development program. Rare adverse drug reactions with the potential for serious outcomes, including fatalities, include the severe cutaneous adverse reactions of Stevens-Johnson syndrome, toxic epidermal necrolysis, and drug reaction with eosinophilia and systemic symptoms. Dermatologists play an important role in the diagnosis of these serious drug reactions and contribute to drug safety by reporting cases of suspected cutaneous adverse drug reactions.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Understanding how asthma biomarkers relate to gene expression signatures could help identify drivers of pathogenesis. OBJECTIVE: This post hoc exploratory analysis of the phase II tralokinumab trial MESOS (ClinicalTrials.gov identifier NCT02449473) aimed to profile baseline airway inflammation in patients with moderate-to-severe asthma. METHODS: The T2 and T17 gene expression signatures, 3-gene mean and 5-gene mean, were calculated through transcriptomic analysis of baseline bronchial brushing samples. Clustering analysis using these signatures identified 3 distinct inflammatory subgroups: T2LOW/T17HIGH (n = 33), T2HIGH/T17LOW (n = 10), and T2LOW/T17LOW (n = 27). RESULTS: Fractional exhaled nitric oxide (Feno) levels were highest for T2HIGH/T17LOW and lowest for T2LOW/T17HIGH (median = 52.0 [range 42.5-116.3] and median = 18.8 [range 6.6-128.6] ppb, respectively; P = .003). High Feno levels were strongly correlated with high T2 gene expression (Spearman ρ = 0.5537; P < .001). Individual genes differentially expressed in patients with elevated levels of Feno, blood and bronchial submucosal eosinophil counts, and IgE level were explored, with cystatin SN (CST1) being the most upregulated gene in all subgroups (4.49- to 34.42-fold upregulation across clinically defined subgroups with high biomarker expression). CONCLUSION: Feno level may be useful to differentiate patients with T2 or T17 gene expression. Elevated Feno levels are associated with high CST1 expression.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: PD-L1 is upregulated in glioblastoma and supports immunosuppression. We evaluated PD-L1 blockade with durvalumab among glioblastoma cohorts and investigated potential biomarkers. PATIENTS AND METHODS: MGMT unmethylated newly diagnosed patients received radiotherapy plus durvalumab (cohort A; n = 40). Bevacizumab-naïve, recurrent patients received durvalumab alone (cohort B; n = 31) or in combination with standard bevacizumab (cohort B2; n = 33) or low-dose bevacizumab (cohort B3; n = 33). Bevacizumab-refractory patients received durvalumab plus bevacizumab (cohort C; n = 22). Primary endpoints were: OS-12 (A), PFS-6 (B, B2, B3), and OS-6 (C). Exploratory biomarkers included: a systematic, quantitative, and phenotypic evaluation of circulating immune cells; tumor mutational burden (TMB); and tumor immune activation signature (IAS). RESULTS: No cohort achieved the primary efficacy endpoint. Outcome was comparable among recurrent, bevacizumab-naïve cohorts. No unexpected toxicities were observed. A widespread reduction of effector immune cell subsets was noted among recurrent patients compared with newly diagnosed patients that was partially due to dexamethasone use. A trend of increased CD8+Ki67+ T cells at day 15 was noted among patients who achieved the primary endpoint and were not on dexamethasone. Neither TMB nor IAS predicted outcome. CONCLUSIONS: Patients with recurrent glioblastoma have markedly lower baseline levels of multiple circulating immune cell subsets compared with newly diagnosed patients. An early increase in systemic Ki67+CD8+ cells may warrant further evaluation as a potential biomarker of therapeutic benefit among patients with glioblastoma undergoing checkpoint therapy. Dexamethasone decreased immune cell subsets. PD-L1 blockade and combination with standard or reduced dose bevacizumab was ineffective.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to examine racial and ethnic variations in national trends, past-year prevalence, determinants of major depressive episode (MDE), MDE-related role impairment and mental health (MH) services utilization in U.S. adolescents. METHODS: Data was extracted from the National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH) from 2010 to 2018. A total of 137,671 nationally representative adolescents aged 12-17 were included in the study. Weighted temporal trends in the past-year prevalence of MDE, and MDE with severe role impairment were estimated both overall and by race and ethnicity. Weighted multivariate logistic regressions were conducted to assess racial/ethnic differences in determinants of MDE, MDE-related severe role impairment, and MH services utilization after adjusting for sociodemographic characteristics, family structure, substance use, activity participation, and problem-solving group engagement. RESULTS: The prevalence of MDE and MDE with severe role impairment among U.S. adolescents has steadily increased, while MDE-related health services utilization remained low from 2010 to 2018. Racial and ethnic minority adolescents were more likely to experience an MDE, but less likely to use MH services compared to their White counterparts. Participating in school, family, community, or faith-based activities was significantly associated with lower MDE incidence. Problem-solving group engagement was associated with MH services utilization (all p-values < 0.05). CONCLUSION: High prevalence of depression and low MH service utilization among U.S. adolescents remains a public health issue. Moreover, racial/ethnic disparities persist in MH and service utilization outcomes. Future research must investigate the burden and predictors of mental illness, and the factors influencing MH services utilization in diverse adolescent populations.

Introduction: Young adults are the second largest segment of the immigrant population in the United States (US). Given recent trends in later age of initiation of tobacco use, we examined variation in use of tobacco products by nativity status for this population group. Methods: Our study included young adults 18-30 years of age sampled in the National Health Interview Survey (2015-2019), a nationally representative sample of the US population. We calculated prevalence of use of any and two or more tobacco products (cigarettes, cigars, pipes, e-cigarettes, and smokeless tobacco) for foreign-born (n = 3096) and US-born (n = 6811) young adults. Logistic regression models were adjusted for age, sex, race-ethnicity, education, and poverty, while accounting for the complex survey design. Results: Foreign-born young adults were significantly less likely to use any tobacco product (Cigarette = 7.3% vs. 10.7%; Cigar = 1.8% vs. 4.8%; E-cigarette = 2.3% vs. 4.5%, respectively; p < 0.01) or poly tobacco use (1.9% vs. 4.2%; p < 0.01) than US-born young adults. Adjusted regression models showed lower odds of poly tobacco use among the foreign-born than their US-born counterparts (Odds Ratio = 0.41, (95% Confidence Interval: 0.26-0.63)). Conclusions: The findings highlight the importance of targeted interventions by nativity status and further tobacco prevention efforts needed for the US-born.

ABSTRACT

To describe effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on older adults living in non-institutionalized settings in New York City (NYC) we used random digit dial sampling of landlines phones to sample then interview residents 70 years and older in NYC from December 2020-March 2021. Socio-demographic, health characteristics and effects of the COVID-19 pandemic were solicited. Of 676 respondents, the average age was 78, 60% were female, and 63% had ever been tested for SARS-CoV-2, with 12% testing positive. Sixty-three percent of respondents knew someone who had been diagnosed with COVID-19 and 51% reported knowing at least one person who had died from COVID-19. Eight percent of respondents reported sometimes or often not having enough to eat, with 31% receiving food from a food pantry program. Significantly more Latinx respondents (24%) reported a positive SARS-CoV-2 test, whereas 17% of those of another race, 8% of white, and 7% of Black respondents had a positive COVID-19 test (p < 0.01). Forty-three percent of Black and 43% of Latinx respondents reported using a food pantry during COVID-19 pandemic, compared to 35% of respondents of another race and ethnicity and 18% of whites (p < 0.01). Twenty-nine percent of Latinx respondents screened for depression compared to 15% among all other races (p = 0.04). The COVID-19 pandemic has substantial health and social effects on older New Yorkers living in community settings, and experiences differed by race and ethnicity. Beyond older adults in congregate settings, those living at home have experienced wide-ranging effects of COVID-19, necessitating tailored interventions.
